Siraj ul Haq, the emir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), has resigned from his post after the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement, Haq said that he accepted responsibility for the defeat and that he was stepping down in order to allow the party to move forward with a new leadership.
“I have tried my best to lead the party to victory, but I have failed,” he said. “I am therefore resigning from my post as emir of Jamaat-e-Islami.”
محنت اور کوشش کے باوجود کامیابی نہین دلا سکا، الیکشن میں شکست کی ذمہ داری قبول کرتے ہوئے جماعت اسلامی کی امارت سے استعفی دے دیا ہے۔

Haq’s resignation comes as no surprise. The JI had been expected to do well in the elections, but it ultimately won only a handful of seats.
Sirajul Haq resigned as the Ameer (leader) of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The party’s poor performance has been attributed to a number of factors, including its failure to connect with younger voters and its inability to offer a credible alternative to the mainstream parties.
Haq’s resignation is likely to trigger a leadership contest within the JI. The party’s central shura (council) will meet on February 17 to discuss the matter.
Among the potential candidates to replace Haq are Liaquat Baloch, the party’s secretary general, and Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, the JI’s emir in Punjab.
The new emir of Jamaat-e-Islami will be announced in April 2024.
